  • Speaker: Terry Barrett, Vice President Business Development, CAVU International

Why This Session Matters for Oil & Gas Operators

The 2025 UTA Oil & Gas Safety, Health & Environmental Conference brings together industry leaders, OSHA, EPA, NIOSH, and key decision-makers to focus on practical ways to improve safety, health, and environmental performance in high-hazard operations.

Terry’s session fits squarely into that mission. Rather than talking about HOP as a theoretical framework, he’ll walk attendees through how CAVU embedded HOP principles directly in the field with frontline leaders—and the measurable impact that followed.

Inside the Case Study: HOP Where It Counts—On the Rig

In this session, Terry will share how CAVU partnered with oil and gas companies in North Dakota and Texas to implement a field-based coaching approach focused on:

  • Real-time leadership coaching on location, not just classroom training
  • Strengthening decision-making, communication, and risk awareness at the frontline
  • Structured After Action Reviews (AARs) that turned daily work into daily learning
  • Standardizing learning across 40+ rigs to support cultural alignment and consistency

Working alongside more than 100 frontline leaders across over 40 rigs, CAVU coaches helped supervisors and crews apply HOP principles in real time—before, during, and after operations.

Instead of asking leaders to “remember the training,” the coaching model built habits into how they planned work, discussed risk, and learned from both success and failure.

The Results: Risk Down, Execution Up

Terry will highlight outcomes that show what’s possible when leadership, HOP, and field coaching are tied together:

  • 60% reduction in incidents in North Dakota
  • 75% reduction in injuries in Texas
  • These improvements were achieved even as operations expanded, demonstrating that better performance and growth can go hand-in-hand when frontline leaders are properly supported.

These results reinforce a central idea of Terry’s talk: sustainable safety and performance gains come from empowering frontline leaders to embed HOP into daily work—not just posting new slogans or launching short-lived initiatives.

What Attendees Will Take Away

If you’re responsible for safety, operations, or leadership development, this session will be especially relevant. Attendees can expect to walk away with:

  • A practical model for embedding HOP in daily operations through coaching—not just training
  • Examples of field-ready tools, such as structured AARs that make learning repeatable and scalable
  • Insights on culture change, particularly how to align frontline behaviors with organizational values and expectations
  • Evidence-based results that you can reference when making the case for investing in leadership coaching and HOP
